What is the Vehicle Maintenance Schedule?

In other words, “How long do you want your vehicle to provide you with reliable transportation?” These questions are answered in the way you maintain your vehicle.  To keep your vehicle operating efficiently and help prevent unforeseen problems in the future, follow the recommended vehicle maintenance schedule as stated in your owner’s manual. Your auto mechanic can explain the importance of regular car maintenance and set you up with reminders for the services required at the various mileage intervals.

Here is a brief description of what the vehicle maintenance schedule may look like in your owner’s manual:

• Every 3,000 to 7,000 Miles – Change the oil and filter for better operating performance and power. Your mechanic should also conduct an inspection of the transmission fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid and wipers, tires and all exterior lights at the same time.
• Every 15,000 to 30,000 Miles – At every 15,000 miles, replace the air filter as needed. Replace the fuel filter around every 25,000 miles. Every 30,000 miles, replace the power steering fluid and inspect the coolant, radiator hoses, HVAC system, brake pads and all suspension components.
• Every 35,000 to 50,000 Miles – The battery should be inspected every 35,000 miles and replaced if necessary. Every 40,000 miles replace the spark plugs and spark plug wires, and inspect the ignition system and suspension.
• Every 60,000 Miles — Replace brake pads and brake fluid, radiator hoses, coolant, power steering fluid and timing belt. Inspect the HVAC, suspension components and tires.

Read your owner’s manual! It provides a routine vehicle maintenance schedule based on the mileage for your specific car. However, your mechanic can also keep you informed as to “what” should be done “when” to keep your vehicle in tip-top shape. These checkups help to identify normal wear and tear as well as identify when it’s time to replace worn or broken parts.
