How Often Should You Service Your Car?

If you are like some drivers, your vehicle’s owner’s manual has never seen the light of day. Vehicle maintenance issues may be the last thing on your mind as long as your car gets you comfortably from Point A to Point B. As a conscientious vehicle owner, take time to understand how often you should service your car. This will help ensure that you are driving as safe as possible, especially with winter just around the corner.

Read your owner’s manual to find the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance service schedule. With a possible few differences for your specific vehicle model, it should look similar to the maintenance schedule described below:

  • Every 3,000 to 7,000 Miles. Change the oil and filter, check the transmission fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid, and wipers, tires and all exterior lights.
  • Every 15,000 miles. Replace the air filter.
  • Every 20,000 miles. Inspect the battery and coolant.
  • Every 25,000 miles. Replace the fuel filter.
  • Every 30,000 miles. Replace the air filter and power steering fluid and inspect the coolant, radiator hoses, HVAC system, brake pads, and all suspension components.
  • Every 35,000 miles. Inspect the battery. It is not holding a charge or if it is at least three to four years old it is time to replace it.
  • Every 40,000 miles. Inspect the ignition and suspension systems and replace the spark plugs and wires as necessary.
  • Every 60,000 miles. Replace brake pads and brake fluid, radiator hoses, coolant, power steering fluid, and timing belt. Inspect the HVAC, suspension components and tires to make sure they are in good working condition.

Keep a record of the regular preventative maintenance items as well as any car repair performed. Your auto shop will also keep records on the service history of your vehicle and can send you reminders when it is time for the next service.
